40th Anniversary of the Summer of Love

Filed under: Uncategorized — davids @ 10:37 am

The new Summer of Love in San Francisco is beginning to heat up, with some new press retrospectives, and a special issue of Rolling Stone magazine devoted to a retrospective on the music. We will be at many of the events remembering the influential social movement that coined the phrase “Flower Power”, by handing out flowers, as we have been for some months, in exchange for email addresses, to build up our mailing address. The continuing support of list members is greatly appreciated.

Gerber Flower Arrangement

Filed under: Uncategorized — davids @ 6:22 pm

Gerbera dasies (or gerber’s), the staple of happy spring arrangements, have a tendency to arrive wilted, as they are often stored in ‘flats’ with their stems out of water. A way to rehydrate them and perk them up is to put the stems in water containing a shot of vodka. Below are two gerberas, the one on the left is as the flower arrived, and the one on the right is after sitting overnight in vodka water. Big difference eh! Happy Mothers Day.

Red and Black Tablescapes

Filed under: Uncategorized, flowers — davids @ 11:48 pm

Unusual color combinations are possible for matching table setting, such as red and black, with simple arrangements and colored vases. For example, the gerber daisy comes in a wide range of colors from white through orange to yellow and red. Combination with a simple vase containing colored plant material produces the red and black arrangement below (Order Here).

Any other combination is possible on request, allowing matching of colors to specific setting needs. The pictured arrangement is also very a simple, and long lasting, arrangement that could be done easily.

South African Floral Traditions

Filed under: Uncategorized — davids @ 2:37 am

Having looked into the floral traditions of some regions such as Costa Rica and Carribean before so I thought I would look at another area. South Africa has a huge flora used in arrangements, and I have written before about the beautiful Disa Orchid. One outstanding flower is the Gerbra Daisy.

Here, Floral Artist, Mary Taylor gives you step by step instructions for designing a horizontal table design from South Africa, using readily available flowers reflecting the flora and traditions of the area.

What is a Premium Rose Variety?

Filed under: Uncategorized — davids @ 2:07 pm

Most orders for premium roses are filled with varieties such as Freedom or Classy, grown in Mexico, which are not really premiums. Premium roses from The Secret Flower Garden are long-stemmed roses from Ecuador, in stunning varieties such as Royal Maasai, and Intuition.

Premium roses are at least twice as large and twice as long lasting as regular roses. Ecuador happens to have ideal conditions for growing the largest, longest stem roses, at 9,000 feet, and 12 hours of sunlight each day,and cold at night.

Here is a nice simulation of an opening rose from http://www.flowersunlimitedworldwide.com/roses.html.
